TJC MANGO

TJC Mango® is probably the world’s biggest, juiciest mango! The average weight of a fruit is 600g but fruit weighing over one kg are not uncommon.

TJC Mango® is a lovely golden fruit with a beautiful skin. It has excellent flavor, low fibre content and a smooth fleshy pulp. The small seed means there is more flesh to eat. The fruit ripens slowly giving time for the produce to reach the market.

Name of the Cultivar/Variety: TomEJC

Origin :
This mango was first discovered in Sri Lanka by Tom Ellawala in his mango orchard among a collection of many local and introduced varieties planted by him in the early 1990’s. Over the next 10 years Tom propagated many mango plants in his plant nursery, selected the one he knew would become a winner, naming it TomEJC he approached the Department of Agriculture in Sri Lanka for classification. The TomEJC cultivar received formal recognition from the Department of Agriculture in 2003 and is now the variety of choice for cultivation in the Dry & Intermediate Zones of Sri Lanka.

TomEJC is well adapted to the dry zone. The existence of this cultivar could be identified as a new variety having distinct properties when compared to the other standard recommended Sri Lankan varieties. It is a regular heavy bearer of high quality fruits. The TomEJC mango season which lasts 7 to 8 months extends from June to January.

Under similar management practices, it has been proven that TomEJC is superior to other popular local varieties recommended by the Department of Agriculture, particularly Karthacolomban or KC in relation to time taken for maturity, flowering habits, production per tree, fruit quality, resistance to pests and diseases and acceptance by the export market.

TomEJC – how did we get the name?

Tom: after the Chairman of Ellawala Exports (Pvt) Ltd

E: for Ellawala Horticulture (Pvt) Ltd

JC: for the late Dr. Juan Carlos from the Philippines, who helped us identify the variety and introduced modern methods of growing mango to the farm.
