THE FARM

Ellawala Farm, Galkiriyagama is situated in the Mahaweli System ‘H’, and is approximately 15km from Dambulla. The extent of the farm is 140 acres.

Nestled between the foothills of the central hills and ancient tank country of Sri Lanka, the farm is located in the Anuradhapura District of the North Central Province. The region has excellent red loamy soil and fine weather conditions to bring out the wonderfully unique flavor of the TJC Mango.

The Farm’s initial planting of mango was confined to small extents of various local and introduced varieties of mango. A large area was dedicated banana and paddy cultivation. However, over the years the main crop on the farm evolved into TJC Mango.

In addition to TJC Mango, the farm also grows Karthakolomban Mango, Willard Mango, Ambul Banana, Pineapple, Coconut, Ambarella, Starfruit, Jackfruit, Soursop and Rice.

A multi-crop demonstration plot has been established recently to serve as a center for teaching best practices in cultivation, irrigation and post-harvest technologies.

The farm has an Agriculture Department registered Grade 1 nursery, propagating TomEJC and other mango varieties, other fruit plants and saplings of native tree species.

The farm also has a herbal garden with over 100 varieties of plants used for Ayurvedic Medicine. It is a collection that continues to grow and will be a very important resource base for the future.

A modern fruit processing factory and mango pack house is also located within the premises of the farm. Ellawala Horticulture now employs around 150 persons, the majority of them women, mainly from nearby villages. It is a model farm visited by many government officials, farmers and enthusiasts.
